If you are planning on hiding the cord from a table lamp you could even get away with only covering the section of cord that shows with this method — oppose to the entire cord itself. Measure the length of the cord you wish to cover.

When the cover is completely on the cord, arrange and scrunch it to your liking, fold the other raw edge into the tube at the end and plug in the lamp. Even though I wasn't thrilled with the choice of fabrics, it did turn out looking nice in her room.
To string the cords through the cover I actually used the piece of pipe again. I have that same problem and dislike of visible cords, so this is perfect.
